The Big Aussie BBQ is the Australian community's biggest day of the year in New York — a free, family-friendly barbecue that brings a slice of an Aussie backyard to a park right by the water.
It started in 2021 as a simple idea: give the Australians of New York somewhere to gather, share a snag, and feel a little less far from home. The kind of easygoing backyard barbecue everyone grew up with — just transplanted to a Manhattan park in summer.
It's grown every year since, drawing hundreds and then thousands of expats, their American partners and kids, and curious locals. No cork hats, no clichés — just warm, sunny community, done properly.
The BBQ is run by America Josh — the largest resource and community for Australians living in the United States, reaching more than 75,000 people. The event itself is volunteer-run, community-first, and proudly free, made possible by partners like Qantas.
